Andy Burnham Confirmed As New Health Secretary in Reshuffle

The MP for Leigh in Greater Manchester replaces Alan Johnson who has moved to the Home Office.Mr Burnham, 39, was previously culture, media and sport secretary - a post he has held since January 2008.

However, before that he was health minister for delivery and quality, with a brief covering the pharmaceutical industry, a post he held for a year before being promoted to chief secretary to the Treasury.During his time as health minister, Mr Burnham championed the idea of an NHS Constitution, a document that became reality on the 60th anniversary of the NHS last summer.Mr Burnham was also a member of the Commons health select committee between 2001 and 2003.


Health Minister Wants to Hear from District Nurses

Anne Duffy, Chief Executive of CDNA is calling on all members to feed their views into the Commission report to ensure district nurses views are heard at the highest level. 
 
The Health Minister, Ann Keen said: "The Prime Minister launched the Commission on March 10, 2009. It will report by March 2010. It covers England, and considers midwifery and all branches of nursing, in all settings, services and sectors. Partly in recognition of my previous experience in nursing practice, management and leadership, I was asked to chair the Commission in my current role as Health Minister. The Commission is made up of 20 leaders in nursing and midwifery practice, management, education and research."
