Latest Swine Flu Update

The incidence of swine flu is slowing, according to latest government figures.

Latest figures show 100,000 cases reported in England, a fall from the previous figure of 110,000. GP consultation rates have also fallen from 155 per 100,000 to 138 per 100,000.

However chief medical officer Sir Liam Donaldson warned that the disease could return with a vengeance later in the year.

He said: ‘I think we are probably seeing a downturn in the illness at the moment but we don’t anticipate it staying away,’ he said. ‘We expect to see a big surge in autumn.’

Prime Minister’s Commission on the Future of Nursing and Midwifery is looking for nurses to contribute their opinions on the profession.

The commission have launched a website, www.cnm.independent.gov.uk  intended to encourage nurses and other interested parties to submit their views on future nursing roles and the challenges facing the profession.

Health minister and commission chair Ann Keen said that members wanted to have an ‘interactive and robust dialogue to identify challenges and opportunities for nurses and midwives’.

‘We’d like to hear your views about nursing and midwifery – whether you are a patient, a patient’s relative or friend, a carer, a member of the public, someone who works in health or social care, or a stakeholder organisation concerned with health or social care issues, within and outside the NHS in England,’ she said.
