CDNA/GMB supports Action on Elder Abuse's call for inquiry on how inspectors failed to spot the 'chaotic' way controlled drugs were dealt with at the home
The Community & District Nurse Association (CDNA) which is part of GMB's HNS section joined Action On Elder Abuse (AEA), the leading charity fighting elder and adult abuse, in welcoming the sentencing of Rachel Baker to ten years for killing a resident of her care home.
The Registered Nurse Rachel Baker gave 97-year-old Lucy Cox a lethal dose of a strong painkiller at a time she was living a life of "lies, forgery and deceit at Parkfields Residential Care Home in Butleigh, Somerset, when Baker was in charge," Bristol crown court was told. Gary FitzGerald, Chief Executive of AEA, said, "Rachel Baker was in a significant position of trust and abused that position for her own benefit, causing the death of a very frail but spirited old woman of 97 years. It is appalling that Lucy Cox should live such a long life only to be eventually killed in an environment that should have been considered a place of safety. We sincerely hope that this sentence will give a strong message to anyone in a similar position of trust who may contemplate 'getting away with it'. What is of grave concern however is that this situation only came to light because of the bravery of two whistleblowers. There needs to be an urgent inquiry to understand how inspectors failed to spot the 'chaotic' way in which controlled drugs were dealt with at the home, and the manner of their prescription. We congratulate the whistleblowers for their actions and send our condolences to Lucy Cox's family." End Contact: GMB Press Office: Rose Conroy on 07974 258123 or Steve Pryle 0on 07921 289880.
