Call For Increased MRSA Screening of All Healthcare Workers

Healthcare workers should be screened for MRSA before being employed and during outbreaks, claim infectious disease experts. A review of 169 studies that screened over 33,000 healthcare workers for MRSA showed that 4.6 per cent carried the antibiotic resistant bacteria and 5.1 per cent has clinical MRSA infections.

NICE U-Turn on Osteoporosis

NICE has reversed its decision to recommend alendronate as the only treatment option for osteoporosis in post-menopausal women. A draft appraisal document issued by NICE now recommends second-line use of risedronate and etidronate in primary and secondary prevention of fractures. The move follows concerns that PCTs are forcing the prescribing of alendronate to patients with osteoporosis, despite one in four patients being unable to tolerate the drug, following NICE's announcement in June to only prescribe alendronate.

Three Year 8% Pay Deal for Nurses

CDNA WELCOMES GREAT DEAL FOR NURSES The Community & District Nursing Association has welcomed today’s announcement from the Government of a significant three-year pay deal for NHS workers. Anne Duffy, the chief executive of the Community District Nursing Association said: “The CDNA believes this new deal offers financial support and security to staff. The direction of health care has shifted to the community over the past few years and district nurses are in patients homes 365 days of the year dealing with complex long term conditions, Their expertise and knowledge needs to be rewarded and they need to be know they are supported and valued. This deal provides this and allows them to concentrate on delivering quality health care in the community.”

OVER 40's TO RECEIVE HEALTH SCREENING

The Government is promising that everyone aged 40 to 74 in England will be offered health checks for heart disease, stroke, diabetes and kidney disease. Patients will be able to visit a practice nurse or healthcare assistant and have a blood test. They will then be given advice or any necessary preventative treatment. The Community and District Nursing Association has welcomed the scheme but expressed concern at the practicalities of offering this service. Practice Nurses are already over-stretched and it is essential that the necessary funding is in place to ensure this can work, for the benefit of patients, but not to the detriment of health staff.

NICE Backs Health Visitors

The Community & District Nursing Association has welcomed NICE guidance that underlines the importance of maintaining the universal health visiting service.
Guidance issued last week on ‘Improving the nutrition of pregnant and breastfeeding mothers and children in low-income households' says ‘it is important that universal services (for example, home visiting by health visitors and midwives) are available for all families with infants and young children'.

CDNA CHIEF EXECUTIVE EXPRESSES SUPPORT FOR TIBET

Community and District Nursing Association Chief Executive, Anne Duffy, has expressed her support for the people of Tibet, adding to international calls for an end to violence from China and freedom for the Tibetan people.
Anne attended a meeting in London yesterday with Director of Children in Crossfire, Richard Moore, calling for democracy and peace in the region.
